Breast Self Exam Instruction:
Breast Carcinoma or breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in middle-aged women.
The breasts are specialized accessory glands of the skin consisting of ducts embedded in fatty tissue.
Most often, the cancer is detected after it has spread to the other parts of the body. Periodic breast self exams are essential for early identification and treatment.
Look for any changes in the skin over breast like redness, swelling or puckering and nipple changes like discharge, scaling or indentation.
There are three ways to physically examine the breasts.
The Circle method
The Line method, and
The wedge method
2-
3- Wedge method: Move the three middle fingers beginning at the outer edge towards the nipple. Repeat the procedure for every wedge until the entire breast is felt.
Regardless of the method, the objective is to feel the entire breast and observing any abnormal changes. The breast should be soft and smooth to the touch. Pay special attention to check the underarm and upper chest areas.

Every 2 minutes, there is a new breast cancer diagnosis.
Every 14 minutes, a life is lost to the disease.
Over 40,000 people will die this year; about 400 of them will be men.
85% of all diagnoses have no family history.
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between ages 40 and 55.
A Snapshot of Breast Cancer
Incidence and Mortality Rate Trends
In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Each year, a small number of men also are diagnosed with or die from breast cancer. Although the breast cancer diagnosis rate has increased, there has been a steady drop in the overall breast cancer death rate since the early 1990's.
While the incidence rate is lower for African Americans than Whites, the mortality rate is higher. Women of other racial and ethnic groups have lower incidence and mortality rates.
It is estimated that approximately $8.1 billion* is spent in the United States each year on treatment of breast cancer.

Blogging For Boobs is an event that is hinged around the need to make people aware that they should regularly self-examine breasts for lumps or growths. Whilst men are susceptible to developing cancer of the breasts and should also self-examine, the much larger percentage of those afflicted with the cancer are women. Globally, approximately 1.5 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
